From STAFF REPORTS

?®Where do you want to see us go??∆ was the question Mayor Terry Bellamy posed to the citizens of Asheville on May 2. ?®How are we going to get there??∆

Bellamy addressed an assembly of about 80 concerned residents and public officials at Asheville High School, who had gathered for a community forum to discuss issues of planning, development and growth management.

The forum was the second in a series of planning sessions, which began with a meeting Jan 13. The earlier forum had produced a set of seven priorities for Asheville??s future that would be addressed in subsequent gatherings.

?®We didn??t want to just react, we want to be proactive on some of these issues,?∆ Bellamy noted.

?®This is an opportunity to hear from you,?∆ she told the audience. ?®To release all that??s in you ?? that creativity of what you??d do if you had all the power in Asheville.?∆

After a very short introduction, attendees got down to business. Participants were divided into subgroups, which worked with a representative of the city to develop their top three growth and development goals.

Following the planning sessions, each group presented its recommendations to the larger assembly.

Among the concerns raised by many residents was the need to update the city??s Unified Development Ordinance.

The concerns raised by citizens will be compiled into a report that each City Council member will receive. The report will also be available at the city??s web site at www.ashevillenc.gov.

Residents wishing to addres their own concerns about growth are urged to contact Lauren Bradley at 259-5484.
