UNCA drops two games; KO??d from NCAA tourney
CLEMSON, S.C. ?? UNC Asheville was eliminated from the NCAA baseball tournament last Saturday after losing its first- and second-round games.
It was only the second appearance ever by any UNCA team in the NCAA tournament. (The Bulldogs?? men??s basketball team advanced in 2003 and won the play-in game before losing to Texas.) In the first game Saturday, the Bulldogs lost 3-0 to top seed Clemson in a contest that was continued because of rain on Friday. The teams played before a capacity crowd of 5,617 fans, mostly rooting for the Tigers.
Later, in a night game, Mississippi State eliminated UNCA from the tournament with a 6-4 win.
Against Clemson, Bulldogs starter Chris Nigro (5-11), who got the loss,
gave up a two-run homer in the second inning before retiring 10
consecutive batters. Nigro fanned four, walked three and gave up six
hits in an eight-inning, complete-game performance.
In the second game, UNCA trailed Mississippi State 5-0, entering the
bottom of the fifth inning, when it scored three runs to narrow the
margin. The rally was led by Matt Henson and Elliott Arrington, each of
whom hit RBI singles.
The Bulldogs added another run in the ninth, but they came up short as
the game and their season ended. For next year, UNCA loses only one
senior, Charles Pippitt, who saw significant playing time.
GreenJackets top Tourists in doubleheader 6-2, 3-2
AUGUSTA, Ga. ?? The Augusta GreenJackets swept a doubleheader against
the Asheville Tourists 6-2 and 3-2, respectively, in baseball on Sunday.
Statistics for the first game were not immediately available.
In the second game, Asheville (28-28) was led offensively by Chris
Nelson, who doubled and batted in two runs. Eric Young Jr. scored both
runs.
Taking the loss in the second game was Chaz Roe (1-2), who allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks in five innings.
Asheville stages comeback to take down Augusta 4-2
AUGUSTA, Ga. ?? The Asheville Tourists rallied to beat the Augusta GreenJackets 4-2 in baseball last Saturday night.
Trailing 2-0, the Tourists scored two runs in the fifth inning and one apiece in the eighth and ninth innings.
Reliever James Burok (3-4) got the win, allowing no hits, runs or walks
in one inning of work. Andrew Johnston notched his first save of the
season by pitching the final inning and keeping the GreenJackets
scoreless.
The fifth-inning eruption was led by first baseman Michael Paulk, who
batted in two runs, and left fielder Cole Garner, who smacked a solo
shot.
GreenJackets trample Tourists with 8-0 shutout
AUGUSTA, Ga. ?? The Augusta GreenJackets shut out the Asheville Tourists
8-0 in a baseball game delayed 91 minutes by rain last Friday night.
Augusta jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added a run apiece
in the third and fourth innings. The GreenJackets exploded for a final
three runs in the sixth inning.
Getting the loss was Tourists?? starter Zach Simons (5-34), who allowed nine hits, five runs and one walk in four innings.
Augusta rallies in ninth to thwart Asheville 4-3
AUGUSTA, Ga. ?? The August GreenJackets rallied in the ninth inning to
score two runs to nip the Asheville Tourists 4-3 in baseball in front
of 2,744 fans on Thursday night.
Tourists closer Brett Strickland (0-3) got the loss, after allowing two
hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks in one-third inning. He
walked the leadoff batter, who eventually scored on a single. A
subsequent wild pickoff throw by Strickland enabled a runner to advance
from first to third base ?? and to eventually score on a game-winning
single.
Leading Asheville at the plate was second baseman Eric Young Jr., who
finished 2-for-4, with a pair of stolen bases, raising his total to 36
on the season.
Intimidators nip Tourists 4-3 to avoid series sweep
The Kannapolis Intimidators edged the Asheville Tourists 4-3 in
baseball in front of 3,009 fans at McCormick Field during Education Day
on May 30.
Despite a good effort by its starter for a fourth game in a row,
Asheville (27-24) slipped up when reliever James Burok allowed two runs
in the eighth inning. Burok (2-4) got the loss.
After dropping three straight games to Asheville, Kannapolis (12-39) prevented a sweep of the series by winning in finale.
Tourists?? starter Alan Johnson sparkled, as he allowed four hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out five.
Asheville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on left fielder Cole Garner??s solo shot, his fifth of the season.
Kannapolis scored one run in the fourth and sixth innings, but the
Tourists regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs
scored off a Chris Nelson single. However, the Intimidators secured the
win with two runs in the eighth.
Asheville tops Kannapolis 7-1 to move into 2nd place
The Asheville Tourists whipped the last-place Kannapolis Intimidators
7-1 in baseball in front of 3,106 fans at McCormick Field on May 29.
The win propelled Asheville (27-23) into sole possession of second
place in the South Atlantic League??s Southern Division. And the
Tourists?? offensive pyrotechnics served as a preview for the Memorial
Day fireworks show that lit up the night sky after the game.
Getting the win for Asheville was starter Chaz Roe (1-1), who allowed

out seven batters for Kannapolis (11-39).
Among the offensive highlights was a solo shot by Daniel Carte in the
second inning to give the Tourists an early lead. One inning later,
Carte followed up with a two-run double during a five-run rally that
secured the victory for Asheville.
UNCA athletics director named outstanding leader
ENKA ?? UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone was named an
Outstanding Executive Manager in Buncombe County at the
Asheville-Buncombe Excellence in Public Service Awards Breakfast on May
24 at the Enka campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.
BSC adds Gardner-Webb, loses Birmingham-Southern
CHARLOTTE ?? The Big South Conference Council of Chief Executive
Officers voted on May 25 to add Gardner-Webb University as a full
member of the league, beginning July 1, 2008.
In turn, the Big South lost a member when Birmingham-Southern??s
trustees voted recently to move the athletic program to nonscholarship
Division III status. The BSC plays 1-AA football and is Division 1 in
all other sports.
City woman finishes 21st in class at Boston Marathon
BOSTON ?± Jenny DeWeese of Asheville, N.C., finished 21st among women in the 110th Boston Marathon on April 17.
DeWeese,
28, finished in 2 hours, 49 minutes and 7 seconds, averaging 6:20 per
mile. Her goal, however, was to finish in 2:46, or three minutes
faster, to qualify for the U.S. Women??s Olympic Marathon Trials.
In the
open division, the Fairview Elementary School teacher was the 18th
woman to finish. Overall, DeWeese placed 381st in the field of 22,517
runners.
She is
coached by her husband, Brad DeWeese, the head men??s track and field
coach at UNC Asheville. He said his wife needs to learn her pace ?? and
to ingrain it.
Another Asheville resident who ran in the Boston Marathon, Tim Grotenhuis, 36, finished in 3:29:29.
