UNCA drops two games; KO??d from NCAA tourney

CLEMSON, S.C. ?? UNC Asheville was eliminated from the NCAA baseball tournament last Saturday after losing its first- and second-round games.

It was only the second appearance ever by any UNCA team in the NCAA tournament. (The Bulldogs?? men??s basketball team advanced in 2003 and won the play-in game before losing to Texas.)

Later, in a night game, Mississippi State eliminated UNCA from the tournament with a 6-4 win.

Against Clemson, Bulldogs starter Chris Nigro (5-11), who got the loss, gave up a two-run homer in the second inning before retiring 10 consecutive batters. Nigro fanned four, walked three and gave up six hits in an eight-inning, complete-game performance.

In the second game, UNCA trailed Mississippi State 5-0, entering the bottom of the fifth inning, when it scored three runs to narrow the margin. The rally was led by Matt Henson and Elliott Arrington, each of whom hit RBI singles.

The Bulldogs added another run in the ninth, but they came up short as the game and their season ended. For next year, UNCA loses only one senior, Charles Pippitt, who saw significant playing time.
