VMI puts away UNCA 5-3 for school-record 31st win

LEXINGTON, Va. ó Virginia Military Institute defeated UNC Asheville 5-3 in baseball last Sunday for its 31st victory of the season, establishing a school record for single-season wins for the fourth time in five seasons. The Keydets are 31-14, 7-8.

Edmund Locklear and Steve Burnich each registered two hits for UNCA (18-30, 8-10). Chris Nigro (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 6-2/3 innings.

In other recent Bulldogsí baseball action:

ï Behind a season-high 22-hit bombardment, the Bulldogs captured a 15-4 win over VMI on Saturday in Lexington. For the third time this season, Kevin Mattison led off the game with a home run, his fourth of the year. He finished 3-for-6 and extended his hitting streak to 17 games, as UNCA improved to 18-30, 8-0. Meanwhile, UNCAís Graham Baughn (5-4) needed only 100 pitches to hurl his third complete game of his career, allowing seven hits and giving up four runs, three earned, while striking out three.

ï Eddie Van Esí two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted VMI to a 5-4 victory over UNCA last Friday night at Lexington, Va. Ben Buchanan (4-6), who came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, got the loss for UNCA (17-30, 7-9). The loss was the Bulldogsí seventh straight defeat. Five of the seven have been one-run loss. UNCA is 4-9 in one run games and has lost 10 games in their opponents last at bats.

ï The Bulldogs left the bases full in the top of the ninth inning to lose 7-4 to Elon University last Wednesday night in Elon. At the plate, UNCA was led by Kevin Mattison, who finished 2-for-5, with a home run and a triple, extending his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games. Josh Lett (0-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs (17-29).

ï Appalachian State University rallied to beat UNCA 12-11 on a bases-loaded single by David Rubenstein in the bottom of the ninth inning on April 24 in Boone. UNCA  was led by Elliott Arrington, who finished 2-for-4 with five RBI; and Rob Vernon, who smacked a two-run home run.

ï High Point University smashed 16 hits to fuel a 7-3 victory over UNCA in Big South Conference play on April 22 at McCormick Field in Asheville. High Point (23-20, 9-6) began the game with a home run by Robby Kuzdale. The Bulldogs were led by Arrington, who went 3-for-5, including a double. A balk by UNCA pitcher Michael Bogaert (2-5), who took the loss, enabled High Point to take a 4-3 lead that it never relinquished.
