UNC Asheville??s board of trustees bid farewell to two of its members
and welcomed two trustees at its meeting May 16 at the campus?? Red Oak
Room at Ramsey Library.
James Shields has resigned as a trustee and Tarik Glenn, the former
president of the school??s Student Government Association is leaving,
having been graduated on May 13.
The new SGA president, John Noor, and outgoing Warren Wilson College
President Doug Orr were sworn in as a members of the board.
Noor, who is a senior at UNCA, is a dual major in political science and economics.
He is originally from Lexington, N.C.
Orr, who retired recently from his post as president of WWC after 15 years, said, ?®In a way, I feel like I am coming home.?∆
He told the board that he was raised in North Carolina and spent many
years as a teacher and an administrator at UNC Charlotte before coming
to WWC.
He also acknowledged his friendship with UNCA Chancellor Anne Ponder.
?®I am privileged to have been a colleague of Anne??s over the years.?∆
Janice W. Brumit, the board??s acting chair, acknowledged Shields?? resignation.
?®I think that for a while, Mr. Shields has been disillusioned with this
board,?∆ she told the board. However, she noted that the trustees must
?®look ahead to the future.?∆
Brumit also honored Glenn, who had to leave the meeting early to attend his first day of employment at Mission Hospitals.
?®When I watch the news, I often get disillusioned with what I see in
the world,?∆ Brumit said. However, seeing young people like Glenn ?®gives
me hope,?∆ she added. Glenn received his BS in management from UNC
Asheville.
Chancellor Anne Ponder presented Glenn with a framed photograph of himself that was taken by the Asheville Citizen-Times.
