MONTREAT ó Montreat Presbyterian Church on April 24 received approval of its request for dismissal from the Presbyterian USA denomination by the Presbytery of Western North Carolina.
The 350-member church had voted overwhelmingly to ask for dismissal so it could join the more conservative Evangelical Presbyterian denomination.
As a result of the Presbyteryís action, the dismissed contingent will
not be able to keep its name. The property it holds was not part of the
decision.
The governing body also voted to create a ìcontinuing church,î
comprising the 27 members who wanted to stay in the denomination, which
will retain the Montreat Presbyterian Churchís name.
