Kapoor to leave council this summer
Wednesday, 01 April 2020 11:39

From Staff Reports

Asheville City Council member Vijay Kapoor announced on March 16 that he will be resigning his position to spend more time with his family.

The move comes before the end of his first term, which runs through 2022.

Kapoor said he is moving to Philadelphia this summer for work reasons, but plans to remain in office until he leaves.

Under the City Charter, it will fall on the other members of council to fill his seat.

In the meantime, Kapoor is asking council members to select someone from South Asheville, the part of town where he lives.

“I remain convinced that every part of the city should be represented by a council member,” he noted recently.

In a statement, Kapoor said, “I’m proud of the contributions that I have helped to make on Council including advocating for long-term financial planning as part of our budget process and pushing for a focus on our neighborhoods, core city services and appropriate pay for our employees.

“And, before I go, I’m looking forward to finalizing the 2020-2021 City budget which I hope will include a capital bond program and improvements to employee compensation, a tree ordinance, a noise ordinance, urban center zoning to address development, and better ethics rules.”
