A story in June’s Daily Planet on a petition by a citizens group against Asheville public radio station WCQS-FM’s license renewal was incorect in stating that “the group had charged that WCQS was not responsive to the local listernship and had violated some FCC requirements,” according to group spokesman Fred Flaxman.
“We never charged that WCQS ‘violated some FCC requirements,’” Flasman wrote to the Daily Planet. “Our charge was far more serious: that WCQS violated a federal law, the Public Broadcasting Act, for 14 years, during which time they received about $2 million in funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting because they signed affidavits swearing that they were in conformance with all federal laws and regulations.
“If the FCC denies WCQS’ license renewal, it will because of the truth of that charge, which the station has never denied,” Flaxman stated.
