The Healing Force, an African drumming ensemble, performs at a Kwanzaa celebration last Saturday at the YMI Cultural Center in downtown Asheville. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the holiday, which  was established in 1966 to celebrate seven key African principles. The holiday takes its name from the Swahili word for "first fruits."
