UNCA trustees vote to recommend increases in tuition, fees for 2007-08 Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 December 2006
The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees last Saturday voted to recommend tuition and fee increases for the 2007-08 academic year.

The recommendation, which now moves to the UNC Board of Governors for consideration, originated with a 13-member Tuition and Fees Committee comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators.

The recommendation would increase annual in-state tuition $135 and annual out-of-state tuition $1,000. UNCA‘s current annual in-state tuition is $2,172 and annual out-of-state tuition is $12,297.

If the tuition increase is approved, 25 percent of the new funds will be set aside for students who are on need-based financial aid, 50 percent of the funds will go to academic services and 25 percent will go to faculty salaries.

The recommendation would also increase required student fees by $98.35 per year. The fees help fund student activities, the student health center athletics and student computing and scientific equipment needs. The recommendation also includes a new $9.50 fee requested by students for campus environmental initiatives.

Room-and-board fees, which are set by the UNCA administration, will also see a slight increase. The annual cost of a standard double room will rise $250 for 2007-08, and the annual cost of a single occupancy room will rise $240-$340, depending upon the residence hall. The increases bring the annual cost of housing into the $3,450-$4,700 range. The annual fee for the full meal plan will rise $100, bringing the cost to $2,780.

The increases in tuition, fees, room and board would bring the direct cost of attending UNCA in 2007-08 to $10,385.35 for a typical in-state student living on campus and choosing the most popular food plan, which is an overall increase of $583.35 a year.

Other costs, such as transportation and personal spending, often referred to as "indirect costs" by college financial aid officers, are not included in the total.
