UNCA??S first black professor, department chair dies Print E-mail
Wednesday, 02 August 2006
UNC Asheville recently bid farewell to the woman who was its first tenured African-American faculty member, as well as its first African-American department chair.

Gwendolyn Henderson died July 25 at Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care in Hendersonville. She taught at UNCA from 1980 to 1998 and received many honors during her tenure, including an award from the National Science Teachers Association in 1997 for distinguished service to science education. In addition, she was presented UNC Asheville??s Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship Award in 1988 for her service to the university and her community.
Henderson was active in the community through judging local high school science fairs and serving on the boards of the Pisgah Girl Scout Camp, the League of Women Voters of Asheville-Buncombe County, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of WNC and the United Way of Asheville.
A memorial service was scheduled for this past Monday morning.
