Augusta edges Asheville 4-3 as comeback falls short
In a rain-delayed game, the Augusta GreenJackets nipped the Asheville Tourists 4-3 in baseball at McCormick Field last Sunday.
Trailing 3-0 after six innings, Asheville (11-7) scored one run apiece in the remaining innings to tie the game at 3-3, forcing extra innings. In the 10th inning, Augusta (15-3) reasserted itself and secured the victory on a triple, followed by an RBI single.
Getting the loss for Asheville was reliever David Patton (4-2), who allowed one run in two innings.
Seven stolen bases lift GreenJackets over Tourists
Fueled by savvy base-running, the Augusta GreenJackets beat the
Asheville Tourists 10-6 in baseball in front of 3,133 fans at McCormick
Field last Saturday night.
The loss spoiled Tourists?? Manager Joe Mikulik??s first game at home
since returning from a seven-day suspension for an outburst in a game
in Lexington, Ky. Mikulik was warmly received by the home crowd.
Augusta (14-3) won by stealing seven bases for its ninth consecutive win.
Asheville (11-6) had problems on the mound. Starter Zach Simons (5-8)
took the loss, allowing seven hits, seven runs (six earned) and four
walks in five innings.
A silent auction for the base Mikulik threw in Lexington raised $4,050 for the Asheville Tourists Children??s Rund.
Third baseman??s bat leads Asheville to win over W.Va.

W.Va. ?? Third baseman Phillop Cuadrado??s hot bat helped the Asheville
Tourists defuse the West Virginia Power 5-3 in baseball in front of
6,337 fans last Friday night.
Cuadrado finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. One of his hits
was a solo home run in the fifth inning, resulting in the first score
of the game. The Tourists never relinquished the lead.
Recording the win for Asheville was starter Brandon Durden (7-2), who
allowed four hits, one run and three walks in seven innings.
Tourists split doubleheader against Power; win finale
CHARLESTON,
W.Va. ?? The West Virginia Power nailed the Asheville Tourists 5-1 in
the first game but dropped the nightcap 9-5 in a baseball doubleheader
at Appalachian Power Park last Thursday.
Starter Xavier Cedeno (5-5) took the loss in the first game for the
Tourists, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks in four
innings.
In the second game, Asheville reliever Jon George ((2-3) got the win,
hurling one hitless inning. He was aided by first baseman Chris Cook??s
grand-slam home run.
Asheville skipper returns, faces taunts, Tourists win
CHARLESTON, W.Va. ?? With Manager Joe Mikulik returning to the helm amid
much taunting from the opposing team??s fans, the Asheville Tourists
rallied to unplug the West Virginia Power 5-3 in baseball at
Appalachian Power Park on July 4.
Mikulik was returning from a seven-day suspension ?? and a $1,000 fine ??
imposed by South Atlantic League officials for a temper tantrum that
was nationally televised.
A photo of Mikulik running with a base during the tantrum was enlarged
and placed into eight equal pieces on foamboard measuring 12 feet high
and six feet wide and positioned behind the Tourists?? dugout.
Afterward, Mikulik reportedly praised the preparation of the props.
Getting the win for Asheville was starter Alan Johnson (8-3), who
allowed nine hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks in seven
innings. Earning his ninth save of the season was Andrew Johnston, who
pitched one hitless inning.
Tourists stomp Crawdads 10-2 as pitcher sparkles
The Asheville Tourists crushed the Hickory Crawdads 10-2 in baseball in front of a McCormick Field-record 4,904 fans on July 3.
While the postgame fireworks show was likely a major attraction,
Asheville starter Chaz Roe (1-3), who got the win, provided some early
sizzle with his fiery pitching in six scoreless innings.
However, after allowing five straight hits in the seventh, Roe was
relieved by David Patton, who threw three perfect innings. Roe allowed
eight hits, two runs and one walk in six innings. He struck out two.
Storm rips up Grizzlies 43-6 in football opener
NASHVILLE, Tenn. ?? The Nashville Storm whipped the Asheville Grizzlies
in their first football game of the season 43-6 last Saturday.
Asheville recorded its only score in the third quarter, when running back Cortez Oliver scampered for a 63-yard touchdown.
The Grizzlies will host the Fayetteville Outlaws in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
