SPIRITUAL FILM, 7 p.m., Center for Creative Living, 2 Science of Mind Way, Asheville. The film “Martian Child,” rated PG, will be shown. The plot tells of a science-fiction writer who adopts a boy who believes he is from Mars. The film stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Bobby Coleman. Admission is free.

Saturday, Aug. 2

MISSIONS MEETING, 8 a.m., Temple Baptist Church, 985 Patton Ave., Asheville. Men for Missions will hold its monthly breakfast meeting.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Oteen Baptist Church, 37 Oteen Church Rd., Oteen. A “Women of the Bible” VBS will begin with breakfast, followed by Bible study and a crafts demonstration relating to the good deeds of each woman in the Bible, then close with a watermelon slicing. RUMMAGE SALE/FISH DINNER, 11:30 a.m., Calvary Presbyterian Church, 44 Circle St., Asheville. A rummage sale and fish dinners will be offered. Dinners will cost $6; sandwiches, $4; and sodas, $1.

Sunday, Aug. 3

SUMMER SERVICE, 10 a.m., Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville. Dr. Melissa Hime, guest speaker, will address “Giving and Giving Thanks: Two Routes to Happiness.Regarding her sermon, the UUCA newsletter said it will address: ” Why do religious people tend to be happier people?” She also will explore two aspects of happiness that religion — at its best — encourages: altruism and gratitude. “With the help of a children’s choir and a family covenant group, we will consider how findings of positive psychology research can inform spiritual practice and increase well-being,” the UUCA noted. Himelein and her husband, Dr. Dale Wachowiak, have been members of UUCA since 2004. Their daughters are active in the Religious Education programs. Dr. Himelein is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at UNC Asheville.
HOMECOMING, 10:30 a.m., Woodfin Baptist Church, 55 Elkwood Ave., Asheville. WBC will celebrate its 63rd anniversary with music by The McKinney Brothers and guest speaker David Honeycutt, the former pastor. A covered dish luncheon will follow at 1 p.m.
FAMILY MEDITATION, 10:30 a.m.-noon, Great Tree Zen Temple, 679 Lower Flat Creek Rd., Alexander. A family meditation will be held, follwed by a potluck dinner. A slip-n-slide will be featured for children. To register, call 645-2085.
SPECIAL SPEAKER, 11 a.m., Anderson Auditorium, Montreat Conference Center, Montreat. The Rev. Thomas G. Long will be the guest speaker in the MCC summer worship series. Long is with Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.

“HOME” SERMON, 11 a.m., Unitiarian Universalist Congregation of the Swannanoa Valley, 500 Montreat Rd., Black Mountain. The Rev. Sarah York will present an address titled “The Journey Home.” York will hare her pilgramage to Nepal to explore how an individual’s journey to distance places can lead to an understanding of what it means to be at home. York, a UU minister and author of four books, is semi-retired to her farm near Asheville with her husband Chuck Campbell.
SPECIAL SPEAKER, 11 a.m., Unity Church of Asheville, 130 Shelburne Rd., Asheville.  The Rev. Jonna Rae, who “died” from a brain aneurysm 19 years ago, will share the seven things she has learned about doctors, death and divine healing that have the power to change others’ world’s, too, in her message: “Make Me an Instrument of Thy Healing!”
TUBING TRIP OUTING, 1:45 p.m., Southern Waterways, Amboy Road, Asheville. The Center for Creative Living will meet for a tubing trip down the French Broad River that will begin about 2 p.m. Cost is $12 per adult and $8 per child. Pre-registration is encouraced. The trip will follow the monthly covered-dish luncheon at the CFCL.
INSTALLATION SERVICE, 6 p.m., Contemporary First Baptist Church, 429 Harris St., Hendersonville. The Rev. James E. Pea will be installed as pastor of CFBC.

Monday, Aug. 4

FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON, 11:30 a.m., Ryan’s Restaurant, Brevard Road (near Biltmore Square Mall), Asheville. The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship will hold its monthly luncheon.

Wednesday, Aug. 6

POTLUCK/SUMMER MIDWEEK SERVICE, 5:45 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville. This summer UUCA is offering worship on the first Wednesday of each month, coordinated by Student Minister Sally Beth Shore. Before the service there will be a poluck supper starting at 5:45 p.m. in Sandburg Hall. The service will follow, starting at 6:15 PM in the sanctuary and will last about 45 mnutes. These services will be informal and family-friendly, but childcare will be available for younger children.

Friday, Aug. 8

FILM/DISCUSSION, 7 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville. “Rights on the Line: Vigilantes at the Border” will be screened on Social Justic Film Night. The film delves into the issue of immigration and the UU principle supporting the inherent worth and dignity of all persons. It is billed as exposing anti-immigrant politics behind the Minutemen Project, showing the continuum between official border militarization and vigilante action. The film, producted by human-right activists and border community residents, also dpecits the border tensions from the point of view of those affected. A discussion will follow the screening. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Sunday, Aug. 10

GOSPEL SINGING, 7 p.m., Fiddlin’ Pig Barbecue, Tunnel Road, Asheviille. The Fairhaven Quartet will sing.

Saturday, Aug. 16

INTERNATIONAL DINNER, 5-6:30 p.m., East Asheville United Methodist Church, 48 Browndale Rd., Asheville. A Dinner Around the World gala will be held in which booths will be set up with food and decorations from different areas of the world. Admission is $5 per person.
ICE CREAM FESTIVAL, 6-8 p.m., First Congregational United Church of Christ, West Fifth Avenue and White Pine Drive, Hendersonville. The 12th Annual Ice Cream Festival will feature cones for $1. For another $2, patrons may choose between sundaes in vanilla and chocolate flavors, with the choice of one of four homemade toppings — fudge, strawberry, chocolate or butterscotch — and nuts and cherries. In addition, the Mardi Gras Blues Band will perform.

Saturday, Aug. 23

FISH FRY, 4-7 p.m., East Asheville United Methodist Church, 48 Browndale Rd., Asheville. The EAUMC annual fish fry will be offer meals at $7 for adults and $3.50 for those ages 12 and under.

Thursday, Aug. 28

NETWORKING MEETING, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Shoney’s Restaurant, Long Shoals Road, Arden. The Christian Networking Association will host its monthly networking meeting. For more information, call Christina Ward, president, at 489-2961.
